Module 5: Privacy Online and Off

In this post, I will be answering a few questions about my thoughts on a few TED talks that will be linked below. So, here are my thoughts on privacy in this digital age as it relates to the questions.

1. How do these issues affect you? You friends and family?

The above TED Talks were all interesting and informative videos. I think that these issues can affect my family, friends, and me in various different ways. Everything that we do online is very permanent, even after deleting whether we know it or not. My family, friends and I all have cellular devices, laptops, tablets, etc. Even down to the children today have technology devices as well.

For example, every time we log into a social media app and make an account, we are giving up our information. You have to put in information such as your full name, phone number, your country and state, and even your birthday. That's a lot of information right there alone. There have been many times where I would either search or speak about a product, and then all of a sudden I'm getting ads for it on different social media outlets. It truly is strange.

2. What should the government be doing about these issues?

In my opinion, the government can do a whole lot about these issues. This is simply from the fact that they tend to use it to their advantage a lot of the time.

But, here are a few ideas that I have thought about that could possibly be done. The government could create digital laws that protect victims of digital abuse such as "revenge porn". They can also crack down on companies by having them provide how much data they are collecting on their users. And also have to disclose specifically all data that they are collecting from the users to the users. Increasing cybersecurity funding would help, raise more awareness in the country about these threats of privacy. I don't feel like many people know how much of their information is actually out there.

3. What can we do to protect ourselves from invasions of our privacy?

One step we can take to protect ourselves from invasion of our privacy is first awareness. It's difficult to protect yourself from what you don't know. There are a few things in the TED Talks that I'm just learning about for the first time. The next step is to control what we can control. One of the upsides to social media is that we can control how much information we put out there. Like the pictures, we post on Instagram and Facebook, when we share our location on Snapchat, or when we share banking information on TikTok. We should all be mindful of what we put on the internet as much as possible. Other things could be updating passwords, being cautious on public wifi, and maybe investing in a VPN. We can also review the permissions we give to certain apps.
