Module 4: 8 Values of Free Expression

Reading about the Eight Values of Expression was insightful. I can see a little more on why Freedom of Speech is so important to us as Americans. I thought that freedom of speech only benefited the individual, but I now see that it can also benefit the government in different ways.

This is my take on some of the Eight Values of Expression.

1. Which one I resonate with?

Out of the Eight Values of Expression, the one that I believe resonates with me the most would be the Marketplace of Ideas. The Marketplace of Ideas is when the true and falsehood are allowed to co-exist and go against each other. When this happens the truth will always win and in turn, will make the truth even stronger. This has been talked about by John Milton.

This resonates with me the most because I believe it ti be one hundred percent true. As a Christian, I'm always looking for the truth and the deeper meaning behind everything. I was told as a kid that the truth will set you free. This quote from the bible has never failed me even until this day. So when applying that to life and our government I have seen how the truth can be covered up by lies. But, in the end, the truth always comes to fruition. The wheat will be separated from the tares. Mattew 13: 24-30

2. Which one feels most important?

Out of the Eight Values of Expression, the one that I feel is the most important is Protect Dissent. This talks about the First Amendment also protecting minority views, no matter how unpopular. This is good to know because it ensures that you can't necessarily be thrown in jail or "punished" for disagreeing with the government or having opposing views. I believe it's important for everybody to be able to have a space to voice their opinions, even if those opinions are not the majority. This very idea is how our founding fathers and others broke away from monarchies.

3. Which one feels most personal?

Out of the Eight Values of Expression, the one that I feel is most personal is Individual Self-Fulfillment. This is when Free Speech enables an individual to express themselves and create their own identity. I am aware that Freedom of Speech is not a rule or law in some other countries. There are other countries where you can be punished for speaking against the government, even down to your text messages. This is a scary idea to think about. So I am thankful that I grew up in a country that allows its citizens to think freely. I like that I can go on my Instagram page and post a rant about something I may disagree with if I deem it necessary. Freedom of speech can definitely bring people and communities together.

4. Which ones do I see in action today?

Out of the Eight Values of Expression, the ones that I see in action today are Stable Change and Check on Government Power.

Stable Change

This is where a society that allows angry or alienated individuals to vent, may result in stability and less violent acts. This can be seen in the most recent years where the government or police would allow citizens to peacefully protest. In those same instances, we can often see that when citizens are not able to peacefully protest or speak their minds destruction can follow. This has included looting, arson, destruction of a community and business, violence, etc.

Check on Government Power

This is when Freedom of the Press informs citizens on political issues that can help them make decisions when voting. We can see this in many places such as the news, social media outlets, newspapers, and more. For example, news came out not too long ago about Donald Trump allegedly falsifying business records. This enabled many citizens to change the way they viewed Trump and whether they were going to support him in the ballot box or not.

Second-Level Thinking:

1. How a theory can help explain something going on in the real world?

When thinking about technologies that I personally rely on social media is one of the top options. One that comes to mind the most is Twitter, or as some call it by its new name "X". Twitter can be connected to the theory of Promote Innovation. On Twitter, you can share ideas with others. Networking can be done through collaborations. Celebrities and even political leaders can speak about issues and encourage or discourage others. Solutions to issues can also be found in diverse communities through crowdsourcing. You can even receive real-time feedback on ideas and opinions. All of these factors help foster promoting innovation, allowing individuals to be creative, energized, and diverse.
